Well, it’s clear that Alisson has had a difficult season at Liverpool.

The Brazilian goalkeeper has been immense since joining Liverpool in a £66 million deal in 2018 [BBC Sport] but there have been far more mishaps than usual during the 2020-21 campaign.

But the former Roma stopper looked back to his best on Saturday as the Reds beat Southampton 2-0 at Anfield.

Alisson pulled off a fine save to deny Che Adams in the first half – and Nathan Redmond immediately after – along with a string of good second-half stops to keep the Saints at bay.

It was this kind of form which reminded Liverpool fans – and manager Jurgen Klopp – just how important he is because any other goalkeeper and it’s possible that the Champions League qualification-chasing Merseysiders would’ve dropped two massive points in pursuit of a top-four finish last night.

And even Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl acknowledged that Alisson was ‘massive’ for Liverpool on Saturday.

He told a post-match press conference: “He made two or three massive saves today. When you want to win here you have to have a perfect game.”

More importantly, these three points keep Liverpool well in the hunt to finish in the top four.

Klopp’s side are six points behind fourth-placed Leicester but, with a game in hand, it’s all to play for.

Even if Liverpool lose their game in hand – a trip to Manchester United – it’s plausible that Leicester could still lose all three of their final games.

The Foxes, who lost 4-2 at home to Newcastle United on Friday, have Chelsea, Manchester United and Spurs as their run-in and honestly, Brendan Rodgers will be sweating over that fixture list.
