Sam Allardyce has claimed that it would be a ‘massive decision’ for Alan Shearer to take the Newcastle United job after surprising rumours emerged that he will be offered the main gig.

The former Premier League boss suggested that Shearer wouldn’t want to take the St James’ Park job because he wouldn’t want to ruin his relationship with his ‘best mate’ Steve Bruce, as he told talkSPORT (17/08/20 at 9:45 am).

The Daily Mail have reported that a Singapore-based group, Bellagraph Nova Group, have submitted an offer of £280 million to buy the club and want Shearer as boss.

Shearer has already stepped foot into the Newcastle managerial hot seat and Allardyce shared his thoughts on whether the former striker would go in again.

“Let me tell you this, Alan Shearer and Steve Bruce are the best of mates,” Allardyce told talkSPORT. “So, I am not sure Alan would want to step into that job now.

“One because of his commitments, he does a huge amount on television now as a pundit and two he doesn’t want to see his best mate lose his job for him. That’s very difficult circumstances to be in, and I know his love for Newcastle is massive and whether he would consider doing that, I don’t know.

“But, for me, Steve Bruce deserves the chance first. He deserves the opportunity on what he has achieved at Newcastle in his first full season. His experience is outstanding in the Premier League. I think given the support and buying the right players he could take the club forward.

“As for Alan, it would be a massive decision for him – He had a short spell there, which didn’t go very well. Whether he has the desire to step into the hot seat now would be a big ask. Only he can answer that in the end. I think under other circumstances, or a few years back, he would have taken a job in football. But I am not sure he wants to now.”

Given how things have been going at Newcastle in recent times, Shearer perhaps has more of a chance of becoming their next manager than Mike Ashley has of selling the club.

Talk after talk has landed the Toon Army faithful in a situation where Ashley is still in charge heading into yet another new season.

The hope for the Newcastle fans would be for the Englishmen to sell up before a ball is kicked in September so the club can move on from his pretty disastrous reign as owner which has seen two relegations to the Championship.
