Ian Wright was unhappy with Bruno Guimaraes for having a ‘problem’ with Jorginho during Arsenal’s 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United at St James’ Park.

The former Arsenal player thinks Bruno Guimaraes should have been sent off, and how he noticed the Newcastle United midfielder having ‘massive beef’ with Jorginho during the game.

That’s what Ian Wright feels led to the Brazil international elbowing the stand-in Arsenal captain in the side of his face.

Previously, Paul Merson and Mike Dean had a heated argument on Sky Sports, with the former official claiming that the ex-footballers ‘don’t know the rules or the game’.

But Ian Wright thinks that if an ex-player was on VAR duty for that match, then he would have realised straight away that Bruno Guimaraes had issues with the Arsenal man, as he told Premier League Productions (06/11/23 at 2:15 pm).

In the end, it was just a booking for the midfielder, with Wright sharing his thoughts on the matter days after the game.

Bruno Guimaraes and Jorginho

“When you look at Bruno Guimaraes and he was constantly chasing Jorginho around the place, in the way he was trying to challenge him,” said Wright.

“This one here (Guimaraes’ elbow) is unbelievable. I remember Mike Dean having a massive argument with Paul Merson about players not being in there (VAR room) because they don’t know the rules or the laws.

“We know that Bruno Guimaraes, for some reason, has a problem with Jorginho and he is trying to get him. That needed to be pointed out. How he doesn’t get two yellow cards in that game is beyond me and baffling.

“Any footballer who is sitting would see that this guy has got a massive beef with him and something is happy. It’s really quite arrogant of Mike Dean to say people don’t know what they are doing. We can easily read that situation and see that this guy is out of control at the moment. He is on one, Bruno.”

A game of talking points

You feel this is going to continue to rumble on because Arsenal were sure to release a statement after the game backing their manager’s comments.

Certain sections of the media have slammed Arsenal for coming out with that, including Alan Shearer, as you would expect, and Michael Owen

But Patrice Evra is perhaps an unexpected backer of Arsenal because he shut down Gary Neville defending the call from the weekend – the ex-Manchester United left-back had a simple message.

All in all, those three points kept Newcastle in sixth place, whilst it ended Arsenal’s unbeaten run in the league, with Spurs the only ones with that title ahead of their all-London clash against Chelsea on Monday night.
