The Italian midfielder stepped out on the Celtic Park turf for the first time since 2009 on Tuesday.

Former Celtic midfielder Massimo Donati has revealed to the Daily Mail that it was “a very good moment” for him to return to Celtic Park as a player on Tuesday night.

Donati made his first appearance at the home of the Bhoys in seven-and-a-half years as he stepped out for Hamilton Academical this week.

Though his current side went down 1-0 to his former club, it was still a special moment for the 35-year-old Italian.

Donati told the Daily Mail: “It was a very good moment for me to come back to Celtic Park because for years I did not come here to play. I just came here to watch some matches but when you are out there, it is good because the atmosphere is always brilliant.

“I spent two good years as a Celtic player and when I was here the Celtic team was very, very good and it had some fantastic players. But this current Celtic team is very good with fantastic players as well. They play well and they’ve got a very good manager in Brendan Rodgers.

“It was good that I was able to get Scott [Brown]’s jersey afterwards. He is the only player that is still here from when I was here.”

Donati spent just two years in Glasgow from 2007 to 2009 and was a regular only in his first season.

It was during that campaign that he enjoyed his finest moment in green-and-white, scoring an injury-time winner against Shakhtar Donetsk to ultimately send Celtic into the knockout stages of the Champions League.

That seems a long time ago now, but for Donati and some Hoops fans it was a trip down memory lane on Tuesday.
