Mason Mount’s dad has told The Sun that the Chelsea youngster held talks with Rangers boss Steven Gerrard regarding a potential loan move to Ibrox last summer before deciding to head elsewhere.

Mount went into the 2018 summer window off the back of a brilliant spell in the Eredivisie, where he scored 14 top flight goals for Vitesse Arnhem.

He was loaned out once again ahead of last season, with Derby County taking him to the Championship. He went on to become a key player for the Rams, scoring nine goals as they reached the play-off final and came agonisingly close to sealing promotion to the Premier League.

But it could have been different for Mount, Derby and the Gers as the midfielder’s father Tony explained that there was an opportunity to head to the Scottish Premiership.

“We spoke to Steven Gerrard about going to Rangers and Steven Gerrard was very similar [to Derby]: ‘I’ve watched Mason, know him inside out and want him to come on a journey with me’,” he told The Sun. “Frank said the same: ‘Come with me and be my player, you’ve got everything I love in a player.’

“I said to Mason, ‘Don’t rush into it, we’ve got to think about it. I like Werder Bremen, and Norwich was a good meeting.’ He said, ‘No, Dad, I’m going to Derby. I want to work for Frank Lampard.’”

Had Mount been capable of replicating the form that he showed with Derby at Rangers – had he made the move to Ibrox – he could have been a fantastic signing for Gerrard’s men, who did send warnings to Celtic that the gap is closing.

It would be extreme to suggest that the Mount’s arrival would have changed how the title race ultimately played out, but the 20-year-old – who has signed a new five-year deal at Chelsea this summer (via club’s official website) – unquestionably has that piece of magic up his sleeve that could have made a big difference on a few occasions throughout the campaign.
