Speaking on Rio Ferdinand’s YouTube channel, Mason Holgate has claimed that something Jurgen Klopp did years ago motivated him against Liverpool at the weekend.
Indeed, Holgate said that Klopp running on the pitch after Divock Origi’s last minute winner in 2018 got to him really badly, and it seems as though that has been playing on his mind ever since.
Holgate admitted that it sounds a bit bitter, but we can understand why that incident has irked him so much.
“You sound bitter, but there’ve been times where they scored in the last minute and you had their gaffer running onto the pitch and they were all celebrating, so to get one back it was massive,” Holgate said.
Ferdinand then asked him if that incident had played on his mind and acted as motivation for him ahead of the Merseyside derby.
“Yeah it definitely plays on your mind, things like that, I don’t really know what to say about it to be able to put it nicely, I don’t know how to do it. It just gets to you so bad, and you’re seeing it for weeks on videos, so to get one over them like that was good.”

It’s interesting to hear how these things work for players psychologically.
Klopp running on the pitch was way back in 2018, but Holgate seemingly hasn’t forgotten about it and it’s added fuel to the fire of this derby.
Luckily for Holgate, he’s finally gotten his revenge as Everton managed to get a rare win at Anfield over the weekend, and while Carlo Ancelotti didn’t end up on the pitch, he has certainly secured bragging rights in the city.
