RB Leipzig centre-back Marvin Compper is set to sign for Scottish Premiership champions Celtic in the January transfer window.

Just days after RB Leipzig boss Ralf Hasenhuttl appeared to pour cold water on suggestions that Marvin Compper could join Celtic in January, it appears that the centre-back is closer than ever to a mid-season move to Parkhead.

According to The Mail, Celtic are willing to pay £900,000 for the one-time German international – and even gave him a tour of Parkhead during a visit to Glasgow on Thursday.

And now, German publication Sportbuzzer states that Compper is set to undergo a medical at Celtic on Monday ahead of signing a contract that is likely to commit the 32-year-old to the Scottish champions until 2020.

Though Celtic fans are yet to be convinced by the defender’s possible arrival. Compper is experienced, versatile and would add some much needed depth to a Celtic backline that has suffered with injuries this season.

Yet, supporters were less than impressed by the fact that Compper will be unable to play Europa League football this season as he is cup-tied following his continental exploits with Leipzig.

Furthermore, with Compper playing just 91 minutes in the Bundesliga across 2017/18, fans have even questioned whether he is any better than the centre-backs already at the club’s disposal.

But after Celtic were thumped 4-0 at Hearts on Sunday, ending a 69-game domestic unbeaten run in the process, surely supporters are more open to the idea of the veteran Compper making the move to Glasgow.

Dedryck Boyata and Jozo Simunovic, who have been the subject of intense criticism for their performances in Europe this season, endured a horror show at Hearts – inadvertently making the signing of Compper look all the more attractive.
