Is Marvin Compper one of Celtic’s worst-ever signings?

Celtic fans could be forgiven for completely forgetting about Marvin Compper.

That is because, well, the German centre-back hasn’t kicked a ball in any competition for Celtic this season.

In fact, the 33-year-old, who joined the Hoops last December, has only managed 83 minutes of senior football under manager Brendan Rodgers since arriving.

And as the one-year anniversary of his arrival approaches, it’s clear that he’s one of Rodgers’s biggest flops.

He might actually be the Northern Irishman’s worst-ever signing, when you consider the finances.

Rodgers paid around £1 million to sign him from Leipzig but, considering he has only played 83 minutes, it means that the Bhoys have paid around £12,000 per minute for him – and that’s before you factor in his salary.

Kristoffer Ajer’s eye socket injury means that the prospect of seeing Compper turn out for Celtic before 2019 is marginally more likely but, barring a full-scale crisis of centre-half options, the former Liverpool boss probably won’t be turning to him.

Worryingly, Compper is contracted to the Parkhead club for another 18 months and that might make it difficult to offload him in January, if he is happy enough to pick up a wage.
