Marvin Compper has suggested to The Scottish Sun that he would not have joined Celtic had Borussia Monchengladbach shown more interest.

The one-time Germany international joined the Hoops for £1 million last December after falling out of favour at Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig.

But the 33-year-old hasn’t been a roaring success at Parkhead and is yet to make a Premiership appearance under Brendan Rodgers.

A lack of fitness and form has contributed to Compper’s low-profile first nine months in Glasgow, but he doesn’t look like being much more involved any time soon after Rodgers left him out of his Europa League squad on Tuesday.

The veteran defender spent six years on the books at Borussia Monchengladbach until 2008, and Compper has hinted that he would have overlooked Celtic had his former club maintained an interest in re-signing him.

He told The Scottish Sun: “There were contacts to Gladbach and to Stuttgart. But in the end, the interest there was not strong enough. At Borussia I would like to have closed the circle and ended my time as a professional.”

Compper isn’t all that popular among Celtic fans, mainly because he hasn’t contributed much, rather than being completely awful when he has been fit, but many supporters would’ve also preferred to see him stay in Germany.

He is behind Dedryck Boyata, Kristoffer Ajer, Jack Hendry, Jozo Simunovic and new signing Filip Benkovic in the pecking order in Glasgow.
