Rangers take on rivals Celtic in the Scottish League Cup semi-final this weekend.

Rangers striker Martyn Waghorn has told the club’s official website they are in better shape for this weekend’s Scottish League Cup semi-final clash with Celtic than they were when the two met in the same stage of the Scottish Cup last season.

The Gers take on their fierce rivals at Hampden Park this weekend in the semi-final of the Scottish League cup.

It is the second year in a row the two teams have met in the last four of a cup competition, with last year seeing them meet in the Scottish Cup semi.

Mark Warburton’s side came out victorious in that game, with the Gers eventually winning 5-4 on penalties after the two sides played out a 2-2 draw over 120 minutes.

Both teams have undergone big changes since that point and Waghorn says his team are better prepared for this game than they were for the clash last season.

“It is a completely different fixture from last year, different personnel, and different scenarios,” he told the club’s official website.

“They come around and you have to be prepared for it mentally and physically and I think we are in the best shape we can be.”

“Even from last year, I think we are in a better position to go forward and really get a result from that game.”

Rangers head into the game keen to secure a positive result after their defeat to Celtic earlier in the season. The Gers were comfortably beaten in that game as Brendan Rodgers’ side ran out as comfortable 4-1 winners.

It left Mark Warburton and his team determined to put things right and Waghorn says that lessons have been learned.

“We have taken the positives from that game and we have applied that in the way we have played from there,” he added.

“It hurt, it was disappointing but we learned a lot from it and it’s how we have moved on from that and as a group I think we have really benefitted from it.”
