Glasgow Rangers were heavily linked with a move to bring Oli McBurnie to Ibrox this summer, but the striker has signed a new deal with his current club.
Martyn Waghorn has joined a number of Rangers fans in commenting on the news that Swansea confirmed on their official website on Thursday that Oli McBurnie has signed a new contract with the club, ending any rumours that he could potentially be on the move to Ibrox.
McBurnie’s future was going always to be a major talking point this summer. He previously had just one year left on his deal with the Swans and went into the window off the back of a superb loan spell with Barnsley.
As reported by The Scottish Sun back in April, he had been heavily linked with a move to Leeds United, while The Sun on Sunday (01/07; page 59) suggested that Rangers had made a £4.5 million offer for the Scotland international.
However, McBurnie is now set to stay at the Liberty Stadium having penned a contract extension with the Swans ahead of their first season back in the Championship.
McBurnie shares a good relationship with the Rangers fans on social media due to his clear love for the Gers, so news of his contract extension has been met with plenty of disappointment amongst the supporters.
With Steven Gerrard probably needing to bolster his striker options this summer, it appeared to be a potential match made in heaven for McBurnie to sign, so it has probably caught some fans off guard that he has decided to stay at Swansea – though it is not clear, of course, whether a move to Ibrox was ever an option that the 22-year-old was seriously considering.
As well as the Rangers fans commenting on the deal, there was also a message sent from former Gers striker Waghorn. Like McBurnie, Waghorn has shown on social media over the last year that Rangers are still important to him, and he has sent the forward his congratulations for bagging the new contract.
