Commentator Martin Tyler has come out in defence of the much-maligned Jordan Henderson, after his excellent showing in England’s World Cup last-16 win against Senegal.

The Liverpool captain shone against the AFCON champions, opening the scoring with a well-taken finish on the edge of the box.

Overall as well, the 32-year-old thrived playing just in front of Declan Rice.

The Three Lions vice-captain was a ball of energy from minute one, constantly pressing, winning the ball back and picking up intelligent positions.

However, the Champions League winner has been slated by many for his displays in a Reds shirt this season.

With Henderson’s athleticism seeing a sharp decline as well as his passing being far from its crisp best, several supporters believe he is over the hill.

So much so that some have gone as far as to say that it’s high-time Jurgen Klopp shows him the door in the summer.

Tyler defends the under-fire Henderson

Martin Tyler, who is often accused of having a bias against Liverpool online and alleged to be a Man United fan defended Jordan Henderson after his brilliant display in the World Cup knockout clash as England beat Senegal 3-0.

“His football has been questioned and it’s a bit unfair. What he’s always had is massive contributions as a person, he helps other players.”

“Jordan Henderson will help anybody”, he said, as relayed by Liverpool Echo.

Tyler’s defence masks Henderson’s flaws

Yes, some of the criticism towards the Englishman, who joined the club for £20 million (BBC Sport) in 2011 has been harsh and extremely over the top.

Over the years, the Premier League champion has been a vital figure in the Merseyside-based side’s rise.

However, this is not to suggest that he deserves zero flak for his displays for Liverpool this season.

Simply put, the experienced midfielder has been a shadow of his well-rounded self this season, and left a lot to desire last term as well.

While the Reds legend is not fully to blame, Martin Tyler’s take about Jordan Henderson is slightly revisionist, right off the bat after his impressive display in the World Cup.
