Martin O’Neill has warned Steven Gerrard against becoming the new Rangers manager.
Former Celtic boss Martin O’Neill has told The Scottish Sun that Steven Gerrard would be walking into Ibrox to manage the worst ever Rangers side.
The Gers are pursuing a permanent manager this summer, given that Graeme Murty has been in interim charge since Pedro Caixinha’s exit in October.
Murty seemed to be in a strong position to land the job permanently earlier this year, but his Rangers side are now in chaos after two heavy defeats to Celtic.
The first was a 4-0 thumping in the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup, and the second came on Sunday, as Celtic ran out 5-0 winners to clinch a seventh straight Scottish Premiership title.
It’s clear that the gulf between the two Old Firm rivals is huge, and whoever takes the Rangers job must know that it will take time and investment to get anywhere close to Brendan Rodgers’ side.
The man Rangers want for the job is Liverpool legend and youth coach Steven Gerrard, with the Daily Mail reporting that he was in Glasgow for talks on Monday ahead of a possible deal later this week.
The 37-year-old would be taking his first steps into management in what would be a gamble for all parties, and Republic of Ireland boss Martin O’Neill has warned him about the job.
Ex-Celtic manager O’Neill has told The Scottish Sun that Gerrard has ‘no idea’ what he is signing up for at Ibrox, as Rangers are ‘so, so bad’ that they are the worst Rangers team of all time – and the only way would be up for the former England international.
“He hasn’t got a clue what he’s letting himself in for,” said O’Neill. “He has been born and bred in Liverpool, so he must have an idea. But I hope he does. It would be nice to see him. I think he would be terrific for Rangers because unquestionably it’s the worst side that has ever played for Rangers.”
“They are so, so bad. They are worse than bad, they are dreadful. The only way is up for him,” he added.
