Sunderland are currently sat at the bottom of the Premier League table, after a disappointing start.

Republic of Ireland boss Martin O’Neill has told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, which was broadcast on TalkSPORT on 14th November, that John O’Shea has been stressing how important Sunderland’s last win was over the past international break.

O’Neill, who used to manage Sunderland, spoke to the central defender about the Black Cats’ worrying start to he season this week.

And the response he got from O’Shea was a positive one, as the experienced defender was delighted with Sunderland’s recent victory against Bournemouth.

“John O’Shea echoes those sentiments [that beating Bournemouth could turn Sunderland’s form around], it was a big win,” O’Neill said. “He came with us. He’s great for us. He was saying it was a big win and a big lift. Three points are on the board and suddenly you’re talking about winning two games in succession.”

Sunderland’s win over Bournemouth was their first of the season, and it has increased optimism around the Stadium of Light.

The Black Cats had failed to win any of their first 10 matches this term, and there were fears that they could start to get cut adrift.

However, Sunderland’s victory against Eddie Howe’s side has moved them closer to safety.

Sunderland are next in action against fellow strugglers Hull City, and a victory would take them to within touching distance of 17th place.
