Dick Advocaat has suggested that Sunderland would be better off if they got relegated like Newcastle United.
Martin O’Neill has told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast Show, which was broadcast on TalkSPORT on 14th November, that he doesn’t agree with people who say that Sunderland would benefit from being relegated to the Championship, like Newcastle United have.
Dick Advocaat recently suggested that Sunderland would be a stronger team, if they were able to rebuild away from the Premier League.
However, O’Neill has warned the Black Cats that there is no guarantees that they would come straight back up if they were regelated this season.
“In terms of dropping down a division, you know what, you start dropping down division and there is no guarantee you’ll come back up – regardless of the money you spend,” he said. “My own view is always that if you are in the big league, stay in it.”
Newcastle have arguably benefitted from relegation last season, as it has allowed Rafael Benitez to remould his squad away from the spotlight.
Newcastle sold some of their higher earners and brought in a number of new players last summer, and they now sit at the top of the Championship table.
Sunderland, on the other hand, have started the campaign poorly and look set to be locked in another relegation battle this term.
David Moyes’ side have won just once in the Premier League to date, and currently sit at the bottom of the top flight standings.
