Martin O’Neill has told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, which was broadcast on TalkSPORT on 15th March, that he believes Sunderland still have the capabilities to stay up this season.

Sunderland have struggled throughout the campaign so far, and currently sit at the bottom of the Premier League table.

David Moyes’ men are currently six points adrift of safety, with their chances of surviving now looking slim.

However, O’Neill feels that Sunderland still have a chance of staying up, but only if they can win their next two games – against Burnley and Watford.

“The next couple of games, I know that you don’t want to look that far in front, but I think they have targeted the next couple of games, which he [Moyes] thinks are winnable,” O’Neill said, when asked whether Sunderland could still stay up this season.

“As Leicester have shown, if you can win two games, you give yourself an enormous chance.”

Sunderland head into their next match against Burnley in poor form, after losing their last three games.

The Black Cats were beaten 2-0 by Manchester City in their most recent outing, and time is now running out for them to save themselves.

Sunderland have just 11 league matches remaining to play this season, and unless Moyes can find the winning formula soon, their relegation looks inevitable.
