Republic of Ireland manager Martin O’Neill has been commenting on the fitness of Everton midfielder James McCarthy.

This season has been a tough one for the Irish midfielder. After a poor season for Everton last term his position at the club was immediately at threat this summer when Ronald Koeman decided to bring in Idrissa Gana Gueye from Aston Villa.

Since his arrival McCarthy has found himself out of contention for Everton and recently has been absent with a groin injury.

But he has joined up with the Ireland squad for upcoming games with Georgia and Moldova, with Everton boss Koeman telling the FAI and coach Martin O’Neill to ease McCarthy back into action.

Speaking to the press this week Ireland boss O’Neill had this to say about his fitness, as reported by Yahoo! Sports:

“He’s over the injury.

“In that aspect, it’s more fitness than anything that would be the concern. If selected, he wants to go.

“I’ll have a look at James [on Thursday] morning, see how he is and see how he has come through today.”

There will be no doubt that McCarthy will be hoping to play for his country this week – especially after a tough start to life under the Dutchman at Goodison Park.

Everton fans will also be hoping he can get some football and come through unscathed.

He may have struggled for form last season, but Everton fans know what he is capable of on his day. If he can get back to that level it could prove vital to Everton’s squad depth.
