Martin Keown suggested on talkSPORT (11:41am, January 8, 2021) that Liverpool should make a move for Southampton central defender Jannik Vestergaard.
The Arsenal legend, who now works as a pundit for talkSPORT, has been impressed by Vestergaard and believes that the 28-year-old central defender would be a good signing for the Reds.
Liverpool have defensive problems at the moment, with Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez long-term absentees.
Manager Jurgen Klopp has suggested to Sky Sports that he may not sign a new centre-back in the January transfer window.
Keown said on talkSPORT (11:41am, January 8, 2021): “I was looking at Vestergaard playing for Southampton, and I will say this on record. I have not seen a better central defender this season, and I looked at his contract situation.
“I have not trying to cause a problem for Southampton, and I thought that maybe that would be a player that Jurgen Klopp would go after. He has been brilliant this season. He is injured at the moment.”
Jannik Vestergaard to Liverpool?
Vestergaard has been on the books of Southampton since 2018 and has done relatively well for the Saints.
The 28-year-old is at the peak of his powers and also has international experience with Denmark.
However, there could be a case of Liverpool having too many centre-backs when Van Dijk and Gomez return if they sign Vestergaard or any other defenders.
Rhys Williams, Nathaniel Phillips and Joel Matip are the main centre-backs at the moment, while Fabinho is playing in the position despite being a defensive midfielder by trade.
Moreover, Southampton may not be willing to sell the Dane, as there is a chance that they could end up in the Champions League places in the Premier League table this season.
