Martin Keown has told TalkSPORT (Friday, 10.45AM) that both Tottenham and Arsenal are title contenders this season after both clubs have made a fantastic start to the Premier League season – ahead of Saturday’s derby.
Arsenal sit top of the tree with 18 points from seven games, having won six and lost to Manchester United. Meanwhile, Tottenham have five wins and two draws from their seven outings – level on points with Manchester City.
In what could already be a crucial game given the close proximity of the two sides over the last 12 months, Arsenal will play host. The Emirates might just give Mikel Arteta’s a slight advantage over Antonio Conte’s men on Saturday.
Asked if either Arsenal or Tottenham are title contenders in the Premier League this season, Keown responded. He said both clubs are certainly title contenders, but thinks Manchester City will win. It is a battle for second place.
“They already are title contenders. They’re first and third. City will be too good, but who will be in second? You don’t want it to be your rivals. Two good managers, one with lots of trophies, one a young pretender. A healthy rivalry.”

He is hardly wrong. Even though we are only seven games into the Premier League season – still only six for some – Tottenham and Arsenal look excellent. The Gunners are playing with enormous flair and talent, they look superb.
Their signings have clicked. Tottenham meanwhile, look well-structured – combining a hard-to-beat attitude with enormous attacking talent in the final third. Liverpool are struggling, Chelsea are in transition, United up and down.
Spurs and Arsenal are showing early consistency. Can they maintain it? It will be interesting to see, in what is already a first-of-its-kind season with the World Cup in the winter. Right now, they have to be considered title contenders.
