Newcastle sit rock bottom of the Premier League table.
Martin Keown has claimed in his Daily Mail ‘Tackle Keown’ column that Newcastle United are in danger of becoming the new Aston Villa, as they sit rock bottom of the Premier League table.
Newcastle suffered a 1-0 loss to Brighton at St. James’ Park last weekend, leaving them on just two points from nine Premier League outings. Losing seven, they have drawn with Cardiff City and Crystal Palace.
Villa are now in their third season in the Championship, and have already changed managers after Steve Bruce was sacked and replaced by Dean Smith. Relegated in 2015-16, they achieved just three wins and 17 points.
Newcastle face a trip to the south coast to face Southampton, and Keown has placed plenty of importance on the fixture but has warned The Toon that they could easily become another Villa.
“This club is a sleeping giant but under Mike Ashley they have not had the injection of cash they needed to be successful,” Keown said.
“Southampton this weekend is crucial. If they cannot win this game against a rival at the foot of the table then where do they go from here? Suffer another relegation to the Championship and the danger is they become another Aston Villa.”
Fans are frustrated on Tyneside, especially after the club were promised by owner Mike Ashley that any money the club makes from sales would be spent on new players. However, the Toon made a big profit in transfer money.
In fairness to Newcastle, of their nine games they have played against Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United. But the pressure is on them now to churn out some results.
