Martin Keown has claimed that it would’ve been a ‘travesty’ had Liverpool pipped Manchester City to the Premier League title today and condemned a trophyless season on Pep Guardiola’s outfit.
A thrilling final day in the Premier League ended with the Sky Blues lifting the title and ruining the Reds’ chances of an unprecedented quadruple in the process.
Liverpool wound up beating Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-1 at Anfield and three goals in the final 15 minutes gave the newly-crowned champions a 3-2 win at home to Aston Villa, who earned a shock lead 2-0 lead which took the Merseysiders close to the title.
This will be Manchester City’s only piece of silverware this season, having lost the semi-final of the Champions League in shock fashion last month.
And Keown, speaking to BBC Sport, says it would’ve been awful had this Reds side won the title today deprived Guardiola and his troops any tangible success to take from this season.
He said: “To think of Man City not winning a trophy it would have been a travesty.
“It is perfection in their performances and it has to be with Liverpool chasing them down. Maybe this will encourage Pep to sign a new deal and take on the challenge that is Liverpool. They just keep pushing towards brilliance.”
Ilkay Gundogan came off the bench to score two of City’s three goals against Steven Gerrard’s side, but the Germany international paid tribute to Klopp by calling Liverpool a ‘fantastic team’ after the game.
And they are definitely fantastic.
Despite losing the title, the Reds can still win a treble this season if they beat Real Madrid in the Champions League final six days from now.
