Jordan Henderson will be looking to break back into Liverpool’s starting XI after coming off the bench recently.
Martin Keown has claimed that Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has ‘learned from the master’ that is Steven Gerrard as he praised him for his recent performances.
The England midfielder came off the bench last Friday to help his team stage a valuable comeback during their 3-1 win at Southampton.
The Reds, who went a goal down early in the first half, were at a deadlock in the second half before Jurgen Klopp’s decision to bring on Henderson changed everything.
He went onto set-up Mo Salah for the decisive goal and ended up finding the back of the net himself as Keown lauded him for how important he has become for the club.
“Liverpool’s midfield may never be as good as it was when Steven Gerrard was in it, but you can see Jordan Henderson learned from the master,” Keown told the Daily Mail.
“Jurgen Klopp deserves credit for not only that substitution but for the way he has managed Henderson and coaxed these performances out of the midfielder.
“Henderson, who played alongside Gerrard 135 times in all competitions, stood up for his team when they needed him most. If Liverpool go on to win the league, people will talk about that comeback at St Mary’s. Henderson’s contribution could prove priceless.”
The Merseyside club are now sitting top of the Premier League table and they go into their Tuesday night Champions League encounter full of confidence.
Porto will be their opponents for the first leg at Anfield and after Henderson’s heroics at the weekend, he will be looking for a start.
It remains to be seen what type of team Klopp will pick because he could have one eye on their Premier League clash against Chelsea on Sunday.
