Martin Keown on Harry Kane as Tottenham offer new deal

Harry Kane is reportedly set to earn a new £200,000-a-week contract at Tottenham.

Arsenal icon Martin Keown has claimed in his Daily Mail ‘Tackle Keown’ column that Tottenham Hotspur should offer Harry Kane “huge bonuses” as he is reportedly set to be handed a new Spurs deal.

The Daily Mail claim Tottenham are set to make 24-year-old Kane the highest-paid English player in the Premier League by handing their number 10 and top scorer a contract worth £200,000 a week.

That is a huge £90,000 increase on his current deal, and takes him £20,000 better off a week than Manchester City’s in-form attacker Raheem Sterling. The gap between Kane and his teammates will grow even larger, as he is already his side’s best-paid player.

Keown, though, believes Spurs must go further than that, as the former Arsenal defender believes Kane boasts the quality of becoming the Premier League’s highest paid player – which is currently Manchester United’s Paul Pogba on £290,000.

He believes that Kane requires extra incentives on top of the £200,000-a-week deal, if Spurs win the Premier League or indeed another trophy: “Tottenham and Kane have to strike a happy medium when it comes to his contract.

“While Kane cannot become the Premier League’s best-paid player at Spurs, the club can still show him they are looking after him financially as much as they can.

“They can also give him huge bonuses for if Tottenham win trophies to reward his loyalty for sticking with them. He cannot become the Premier League’s best-paid player while at Tottenham because he is not at the richest club.”

Kane has continued his amazing goalscoring form this time around – which has seen him win the Premier League’s golden boot for the last two seasons – by scoring 24 goals in 25 games for the north Londoners.

He has almost single-handedly kept Spurs in touch with the Premier League’s top four, as Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen have both been slightly off the boil this season.

It remains to be seen if the reports over Kane’s contract turn out to be true, and whether the Spurs hierarchy will listen to Keown’s opinion over potential bonuses.
