Everton’s Romelu Lukaku reportedly wants to move away from Goodison Park, but Keown has suggested that Tottenham Hotspur’s star overshadows him.
Everton’s Romelu Lukaku
Martin Keown has taken to the Daily Mail to warn Romelu Lukaku that the bigger clubs he may want to join would probably rather have Tottenham’s Harry Kane over the Everton star for a few reasons.
Lukaku largely damaged his rapport with the Toffees supporters recently when he turned down a new contract at Goodison Park while reiterating his desire to go and play in the Champions League (via Guardian).
And while he managed to put any speculation on the back-burner in his first appearance following the contract rejection as he scored twice in the 4-0 win over Hull, his last two performances have received plenty of criticism.
The Belgian was somewhat anonymous in both the Merseyside derby defeat to Liverpool and the draw with Manchester United in midweek. And Keown has hit out at the striker, claiming that bigger clubs would rather get his golden boot rival in.
“In their last two games, against Liverpool and United, he didn’t look like a £60million-plus striker,” he told the Mail.

“He has been making noises about moving but big clubs can see that Harry Kane is a better all-round striker and lower maintenance too.
“You judge a player by the decisions he makes and Lukaku doesn’t make enough good ones.”
While Lukaku currently tops the goalscoring charts in the Premier League with 21 strikes to his name, Kane’s strike-rate is actually considerably better with his 19 goals coming in just 22 appearances for Tottenham.
Tottenham’s Harry Kane celebrates scoring
And as Keown suggests, with Kane it seems as though he would conduct himself rather differently if he decided that he did want to leave Spurs in the future perhaps by keeping the situation out of the public eye due to his admiration and respect for the club.
Lukaku has now put himself under pressure to prove that he can be a striker capable of leading the line for a Champions League heavyweight, and based on his last two performances, he still has a long way to go before he is ready for that step.
