Martin Keown has told The Daily Mail that he is shocked by Harry Kane’s unrelenting hunger to score goals for Tottenham Hotspur.

The 24-year-old hitman grabbed a hat-trick in Tuesday’s 5-2 demolition of Southampton to finish the calendar year with 39 Premier League goals – and 56 in all competitions for club and country over the past 12 months, eclipsing Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Indeed, the Tottenham star, who is in his fourth full season as a Spurs regular, seems to be getting better and better under Mauricio Pochettino after initially struggling for Premier League games under the Argentine manager back in 2014.

And the Arsenal legend believes that a need to prove people wrong continues to drive him.

“What I find so gratifying about watching Harry Kane is that he just wants to get better and better,” he told The Daily Mail.

“He never lets the adulation get to his head — he draws from it to help him improve.

“When he burst on to the scene in the Europa League with Tottenham, you felt that he wanted to keep scoring to prove his doubters wrong. That same mentality keeps driving him now.”

Kane is indeed a freakishly good goalscorer and the fact that he beat Alan Shearer’s record of 36 Premier League goals in a calendar year is a major reflection about that.

But the longer Tottenham go without winning a major title, the more vulnerable they are to losing him.

Twenty one points behind Manchester City this season, Spurs won’t be winning the Premier League title, but a serious run in the Champions League could be just what the Lilywhites and Kane needs.
