Spurs have qualified for the Champions League after beating Newcastle on Wednesday.
Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown has disagreed with Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Hugo Lloris in his Daily Mail ‘Tackle Keown’ column after the French goalkeeper claimed a top-four place is more than winning a trophy.
Spurs booked their place in the top four of the Premier League and confirmed Champions League football for next season with a narrow 1-0 win over Newcastle United on Wednesday night.
Harry Kane scored an excellent second-half strike after good build-up play that saw the 24-year-old striker curl a wonderful effort into the top corner to claim all three points.
Lloris, 31, was quoted by Sky Sports as saying: “Not a lot of people believed in Tottenham for the top four places and I think today means more than a trophy because we showed the club is strong even if we had some difficult moments.”
But Keown reacted by saying that Spurs will not have “complete satisfaction” from their season as they failed to win a trophy, losing in the semi-final of the FA Cup to Manchester United last month.
“With Spurs moving to a new stadium it is vitally important they qualified for the Champions League,” Keown said. “But next weekend they will be watching as one of Manchester United or Chelsea lifts the FA Cup.
“When you come to reflect on a season without winning a trophy, you do not sit there with complete satisfaction. Champions League qualification was clearly the priority for Spurs this year. Next season, it should be winning a trophy.”
Spurs now sit in third place, four points above London rivals Chelsea who are fifth in the Premier League table while Liverpool sit in fourth on 72 with just one league game left to play.
Mauricio Pochettino is likely to be busy this summer with a number of first-team stars in the final year of their contract, including Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen and Mousa Dembele, while others are expected to be brought in.
