Everton fans have been criticised by Martin Keown for their actions during Thursday’s 4-1 defeat at Goodison Park.
The Toffees were hammered by Newcastle in what was a crucial game as far as their fight for survival is concerned – the result now leaves Sean Dyche’s side 19th in the Premier League with five games remaining.
While there was plenty of shambolic defending on show for Keown to question, he has chosen to take aim at the Everton fans.
What’s the story?
Well, the 56-year-old hit out at some Everton fan for leaving Goodison Park early.
Speaking on talkSPORT, Keown said: “At 3-1, fans were leaving the stadium. Too many of the Everton fans are jacking it in. I don’t like the look of that, leaving the stadium. Stay there and support your team, through thick and thin. They look like they’ve given up, the supporters.”
Now, that is a remarkably tone deaf assessment from Keown – Everton fans will be furious.
Everton supporters made an effort to get to Goodison Park early, passionately greet the team bus as Dyche’s men arrived for the game, and also held up a vast array of banners to show the players that they are behind them.
What did they get in return? Nothing.
Why should fans continue to make the effort and spend their hard earned money – especially during a cost of living crisis – only to have it thrown back in their face by players who are clearly not putting 100% in?
Everton fans have done their bit – on Thursday and in many games before that – and it is no surprise to see many lose faith in this spineless group of players who simply have not responded to their support one bit.
Everton in trouble
If Everton cannot beat Leicester on Monday, then it could be curtains for the Toffees.

A loss would leave Everton 19th in the Premier League with Brighton, Manchester City, Wolves and Bournemouth still to come, a fixture list that does not make for good reading with Dyche in need of 12 points to reach the magic 40-point mark.
It is looking like an uphill battle for Everton, and with thousands of fans now alienated, we can’t see the Toffees getting out of this situation.
