Martin Keown has written in The Daily Mail that Liverpool duo Jordan Henderson and Fabinho are making mistakes.

Fabinho and Henderson are midfielders by trade, but the Brazil international and the England international have been playing in defence.

According to WhoScored, Fabinho has played 18 times in central defence this season, while Henderson has started in defence six times in the league.

Arsenal legend Keown has pointed out the mistakes that the two Liverpool players are making.

Keown wrote in The Daily Mail: “As good as Henderson and Fabinho are, they are making mistakes which specialist central defenders wouldn’t. That has been a big downfall for Liverpool, as evidenced by the 4-1 defeat by Manchester City at Anfield last week.

“For City’s opener, Raheem Sterling beat Trent Alexander-Arnold and Fabinho was too far away from his right back, whereas Gomez would have known to be closer to provide protection.

“Later, for City’s second goal, Phil Foden won his one-on-one against Henderson to assist Ilkay Gundogan, whereas Van Dijk hardly ever lets opponents dribble past him.”

In defence of Fabinho and Jordan Henderson

As Keown himself notes, Fabinho and Henderson are not defenders and have played in midfield for most of their careers.

It is not easy for midfielders to turn out in defence, and it must be said that the duo, especially Fabinho, has done well at the back overall.

Now that Liverpool have signed Ben Davies and Ozan Kabak, it is very likely that Fabinho and Henderson will go back into playing in midfield.

Defending English champions Liverpool are fourth in the Premier League table at the moment with 40 points from 23 matches.
