Martin Keown believes that Tottenham Hotspur have made such a smart transfer move by bringing in Matt Doherty, as per his comments in the Daily Mail.

Doherty was snapped up by Tottenham from Wolverhampton Wanderers earlier this summer, and the signing looks like one that will immediately improve Jose Mourinho’s side.

Tottenham failed to find a reliable right-back last term, with Serge Aurier simply too error prone to be depended upon.

Doherty, on the other hand, has been rock solid for Wolves over a number of years.

And when discussing Tottenham’s chances over the coming season, Keown could not help but point out that he thinks Doherty has to be considered an excellent addition.

“We know Mourinho’s track record — he’s won a trophy at every club he’s managed and 25 in total across Europe. So we’d be silly to say he can’t do it at Tottenham, too,” he said.

“Several members of the side that reached the Champions League final in 2019 are still there, Harry Kane included. Eric Dier is being used at centre back, which I consider his best position. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is a good addition who was part of a Southampton side that pressed very well, and Matt Doherty from Wolves was a smart buy.”

Doherty may have only been training with Tottenham for a week after intentional duty, but it is widely expected that he will come straight into their starting line-up.

Tottenham are due to face Everton on Sunday, and Mourinho’s side should be given a tough test by the Toffees, who have spent big again this summer.
