Martin Keown has told BT Sport’s coverage of Arsenal drawing with Sporting Lisbon that goalkeeper Matt Turner can not be trusted after his shaky performance between the sticks for the Gunners – in a match that ended in a 2-2 draw.
Turner, 29, was handed his seventh outing of the season on Thursday evening in Lisbon. His fifth in the Europa League this season. The USA star had made a solid start at Arsenal, keeping four clean sheets in six games – conceding two.
But against tougher opposition in the form of Sporting, Turner was poor. The £7.5m Arsenal signing was the man to blame for the first goal – failing to come and collect a deep corner that Goncalo Inacio headed into the back of the net.
A dodgy pass into William Saliba almost saw Arsenal concede, while he pushed a shot shakily around the post. Not a convincing performance and Keown lambasted the goalkeeper – claiming he cannot be trusted by boss Mikel Arteta.

“What I’d be saying, if I’m playing regularly with this keeper, I’m going to have to go and head things because I can’t necessarily trust him. I hope it’s a one-off,” Keown said, while analysing the draw during BT Sport’s coverage last night.
Keown: Turner cannot be trusted as Arsenal draw with Sporting Lisbon
At the end of the day, a really good result for the Gunners. Sporting came within an inch of qualifying for the next stage of the Champions League in a group with Tottenham, Marseille and Frankfurt. So, they are a very good side.
Ruben Amorim is a highly-rated manager that will surely end up in the Premier League at some stage. To get a point away from home sets the Gunners up at The Emirates next week. Whether Turner starts again, is another question.
