Speaking to BBC Sport, Martin Keown says Arsenal have signed the Jamie Vardy they wanted in Lucas Perez.

The Deportivo striker is on the verge of making the move to the Emirates after they made a late bid for his services this season.

His potential arrival has been met with a mixed reception, with fans impressed by his goalscoring record in La Liga but questioning whether he is the top-level striker that their side has been craving.

Keown has appeared to back the move though, saying he believes the forward will add the extra factor in the final third that Arsenal need.

“He has tremendous pace and that’s a variation Arsenal need in that final third,” he told BBC Sport.

“At the moment a lot goes into Olivier Giroud and you need variety. You have to test the back line. This is the Jamie Vardy Arsenal wanted but in the shape of a Spanish player.”

There is no denying that Arsene Wenger will be desperately hoping that Perez proves to be a hit for his side.

The Frenchman has been widely criticised for his lack of movement this summer, with that criticism likely a big factor in the late move for Perez.

And should he prove to be a big hit at the Emirates, he can use it as proof that Arsenal fans in particular should show more faith in his actions.
