BBC Sport pundit Martin Keown has admitted that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain ‘surprised’ him at how ‘bright’ he was during Liverpool’s 5-0 win over Huddersfield on Friday.

The 25-year-old, who had previously been on the sidelines with a long-term injury, returned to action for Jurgen Klopp’s side when he brought him on a second-half substitute.

Speaking to Football Focus on BBC One (27/04/2019 at 12:15 pm), Keown was impressed at how lively Oxlade-Chamberlain looked given the amount of time he was out for.

“He surprised me at how bright he was,” Keown told Football Focus. “He didn’t look like a player that had been out for nearly a year. But that’s really good news for Liverpool [that he’s back] massive games coming up.”

Truthfully, Oxlade-Chamberlain should have scored moments after when he came on because he was put through on goal but his shot wasn’t strong enough to test opposition goalkeeper Jonas Jossl.

Added with that, every time he touched the ball he got a loud cheer from the Anfield supporters who were delighted to see one of their main creative talents return to action.

The England international will now be focusing on trying to push his title-chasing side over the line as they currently sit top of the table.

On Wednesday night, they make the trip to Spain to take on La Liga giants Barcelona in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final encounter.
