Martin Jol has predicted to Football London that he believes Tottenham Hotspur will have little choice but to sign squad players this summer.

Tottenham haven’t signed a single player for 18 months but Spurs fans are hoping that Mauricio Pochettino ends that drought this summer.

Pochettino has just led the North Londoners to a Champions League final, however, and the Dutch manager feels that the Argentine will struggle to sign upgrades on the current mainstays of his first XI.

Jol, who spent three years as Lilywhites boss, also claimed that Dele Alli was ‘a bit average’ last season, but admitted that Pochettino won’t find a better player than the Iniesta-esque star.

He told Football London: “Even in Barcelona you couldn’t find better. Iniesta was better on the ball but he was not scoring the goals and getting in behind with the unbelievable timing of Dele.

“This season he’s probably been a bit average but do you really think Pochettino will think ‘I need a better player than Dele Alli now’? I don’t think so. He will just keep developing him.

“Or Son, where can you find a better flank player or a second striker than Son? You can’t find it. So the only thing you can think of is to get better substitute or back-up players.”

Statistically, Alli did indeed have his worst season since joining Tottenham, netting five goals and setting up only three in 25 Premier League appearances.

For whatever reason, the 23-year-old, who struggled in the Champions League final defeat by Liverpool, was nowhere near his best, but Jol is right. There is still a lot more to come from the England international and signing an upgrade is nigh-on impossible.
