Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Martin Jol has told Football.London that he thinks Spurs would be ‘unbeatable’ if they had a player like Riyad Mahrez or Eden Hazard.

Spurs played their final ever game at White Hart Lane on Sunday afternoon, and picked up a 2-1 win over Manchester United thanks to goals from Victor Wanyama and Harry Kane.

Tottenham’s 118-year home will now be demolished to make room for the club’s new stadium just yards away, but will temporarily move to Wembley Stadium in the meantime.

Sunday’s win means that Tottenham will now finish in second place in the Premier League table, and whilst their attempts to chase down Chelsea fell flat, it has been another successful season for Mauricio Pochettino.

With just four defeats in 36 games, Spurs have lost the fewest amount of games this season, have conceded the fewest amount of goals in the Premier League with just 24, and have ended their home campaign without defeat, dropping just four points at White Hart Lane.

And yet still, the best Spurs can hope for now is to finish four points behind Chelsea, and whilst finishing above Arsenal for the first time in more then 20 years is a monkey off Tottenham’s back, questions are being asked over how Tottenham can take the next step.

Former Spurs manager Martin Jol has had his say, telling Football.London that Tottenham would be unbeatable for years if they had a winger like Chelsea’s Eden Hazard or Leicester’s Riyad Mahrez.

“I was talking to one of Spurs’ double winners Cliff Jones. I said the only player they lack now is someone like him, a winger,” said Jol. “If they put in one player like Hazard or Mahrez then wow and Cliff said he agreed. If Spurs could get a player like one of them then they would be unbeatable for the next couple of years. They would be champions,” he added.

Fascinatingly, The Telegraph report that Mahrez is set to leave Leicester this summer, and manager Pochettino had attempted to land the Algerian wide man in January. In order to truly challenge for the Premier League, they may well need that winger who can conjure up a piece of magic like 26-year-old Mahrez has for Leicester – but whether Daniel Levy will fund such a move remains to be seen.
