Rangers are set to lure midfielder Greg Docherty to Ibrox.

Hamilton Academical boss Martin Canning has told STV that he thinks Greg Docherty will ‘do well’ at Rangers as his move draws ever closer.

Rangers have been busy in the transfer market this month, as after tying down loanee Declan John to a permanent deal, they have brought in four new signings.

Russell Martin, Sean Goss, Jamie Murphy and Jason Cummings have all joined Rangers this month, but given that all four were loan deals, some fans have been waiting for the Gers to bring in another permanent signing.

Over the last week, the Gers have been working hard on a deal for Hamilton Academical midfielder Greg Docherty, with one bid failing for the Scot last week.

Now though, Docherty appears to be heading to Ibrox after the two clubs agreed a fee, believed to be in the region of £650,000 according to a report from the Daily Record.

Docherty will undergo a medical with Rangers on Thursday, meaning he was pulled out of Hamilton’s 3-0 defeat to Hearts on Wednesday night, and manager Martin Canning spoke about the midfielder’s exit after the game.

Canning told STV that losing Docherty is a ‘big blow’, but believes Hamilton can be proud of how they have developed Docherty, and he now moves on whilst the Accies benefit financially.

Canning predicted that Docherty will ‘do well’ for Rangers, praising his mentality as well as his creativity and goalscoring ability from midfield, touting him for a big future at Ibrox.

“His loss is a blow,” said Canning. “He’s been productive player for us and a big goal threat but this club’s ethos is not to stand in a player’s way. We’ve done our job with Greg and now the club benefits financially and the player benefits moving on. That’s part of our model. I thought young Lewis Ferguson, who replaced Greg, was excellent. He’s the next one off the production line.”

“I think Greg will do well at Ibrox. He’s got all the attributes, he’s level-headed, very mature for his age. He’s creative, he scores goals and he has a bright future in front of him and I wish him all the best. He’s played a lot of games for me and he’s done really well. It’s great to see him have that opportunity and I hope he takes it,” he added.
