Hamilton Academical boss Martin Canning has told The Scottish Sun that he has spoken to midfielder Greg Docherty about his future amid interest from Rangers.

Docherty, 21, has come up through the ranks with Hamilton and now has more than 100 first-team appearances to his name, and has been impressing this season.

The midfielder’s displays are now attracting major interest, with the Daily Record reporting that Rangers have failed with a £300,000 bid to lure him to Ibrox.

It’s noted that Cardiff City, Millwall, Preston North End and Swansea City are all keen on signing Docherty, meaning Rangers face a major battle to land him this month.

After already bringing in Russell Martin, Sean Goss, Jamie Murphy and Jason Cummings in loan deals this month, Rangers are now looking to make a permanent signing in Docherty, but they will have to pay up to do it.

Hamilton boss Martin Canning has told The Scottish Sun that chairman Ronnie MacDonald will take charge of the situation, and Docherty is still very much a Hamilton player until an acceptable offer is put forward.

Canning added that he has spoken to Docherty, and the midfielder’s full focus remains with Hamilton, and he will be proud of him if he does end up moving on to something better after spending so long in the Hamilton ranks.

“That’s all Ronnie [MacDonald] the chairman that will deal with that sort of thing,” said Canning. “Whenever I find out is when Ronnie phones me and says the club have accepted an offer for Greg Docherty and that’s when Greg Docherty moves. Until that happens Greg is a Hamilton player.”

“I spoke to Greg yesterday and he’s a very mature level-headed young boy so his full focus is on making sure that he’s committed to Hamilton and going to do his job. If something happens for Greg, as a club we’ve done our job properly. We’ve brought a kid from nine years old through our academy and into our first team and we’ve sold him onto a club that will hopefully develop him further,” he added.
