The Uruguay international would be a useful addition to the West Bromwich Albion squad.

Baggies boss Tony Pulis has proven that he is stubborn if nothing else during his time in football management, following numerous occassions where he has refused to pay over the odds for some of his primary transfer targets.

It would be no surprise to see West Brom flounder in the transfer market once again this summer, as prices around Europe continue to rise.

With this in mind, Pulis might be best served in targeting the free transfer market, if he is to gain real value for his money this summer, and an interesting option for them could be former Juventus centre back Martin Caceres.

The Uruguayan joined Southampton in February on a short-term deal, but failed to establish himself at St Mary’s, making just one Premier League start for the Saints.

The 30-year-old still has a lot to offer at the highest level, however, after returning to full fitness following his lengthy injury lay-off last year, and could be a fantastic addition to the West Brom squad.

His experience of playing at the very highest level for such a sustained period of time could prove to be a real asset for the Black Country outfit.

Caceres’ footballing CV can be matched by few in the game. He has 70 international caps for Uruguay under his belt, a La Liga title, five Serie A titles, and a Champions League winners medal to his name.

He is a classy operator, and with his impressive anticipation skills, he would be the ideal central defensive partner for Jonny Evans.

One potential stubbing block could be the Uruguayan’s wage demands, after the Mirror reported that he was on an extortionate £100,000 per week at Southampton.

If some kind of compromise can be reached, however, and Pulis manages to bring Caceres to the Hawthorns, it could turn out to be a signing of real significance for the Baggies.
