The ink is barely dry on Jesse Marsch’s Leeds United contract and already the American is tinkering with Marcelo Bielsa players.
Jack Harrison revealed this week that he could be set for a positional change under Marsch.
The former Manchester City attacker has been predominantly used as a winger for the vast majority of his career at Leeds.
However, Harrison himself claimed that Marsch was considering deploying him as a number 10.
He said to BBC Sport West Yorkshire: “I grew up playing in a more central role as a number 10 so it brings back some old memories of when I was a kid. I’m hoping to see a more improved Jack Harrison, score more goals and have more impact on games.”
Masterstroke?
And this, if it works, could be a masterstroke by the former RB Leipzig manager.
Fortune favours the brave and tweaking the position of somebody who scored a Premier League hat-trick already this year is definitely courageous.
But it’s also necessary.
The Whites are only two points clear of the relegation zone and with Tyler Roberts now absent for the rest of the season, and Rodrigo struggling, Harrison’s penetration from advanced midfield could be particularly fruitful.
And if he scores more goals as a result of Marsch’s courage well all the better.
The bottom line is Leeds need goals.
Nothing else will keep them in the Premier League and with Harrison’s new role, combined with Patrick Bamford’s return, well Marsch might be proven right to tinker.
It’s time for new ideas and unleashing Harrison in a different role is as exciting as it is brave.
