The Belgian defender is back at Hillsborough following a loan spell at Preston North End.

The agent of Sheffield Wednesday defender Marnick Vermijl has confirmed interest in his client’s services from both England and Belgium.

Speaking to Voetbal Nieuws, Vermijl’s representative Nico Vaesen said the right-back will almost certainly remain in English football, either at Wednesday or elsewhere.

Vermijl joined the Owls from Manchester United 18 months ago but spent the whole of last season on loan to Preston North End.

And a return to Deepdale, where he made 32 appearances, could be on the cards according to Vaesen.

“Marnick belongs to Sheffield Wednesday,” he told Voetbal Nieuws. “There is some interest in him. Preston were very pleased with him (and) that is certainly an option we investigate further.

“He will almost certainly remain in England, (with) Sheffield or another club. Marnick is very happy with his girlfriend in England. Belgium is only an option if a club from the top five come for him, then we will always listen.

“He is now two years under contract with Sheffield and the interest from England is more concrete than from Belgium.”

Vermijl faces a battle to oust regular Wednesday right-back Jack Hunt, while Liam Palmer performed reliably in the latter’s absence lasts season.

However, the Owls’ ongoing search for a new left-back could keep the 24-year-old at Hillsborough for the time being, with his versatility allowing him to operate on either side if required.

Should he return to Preston, Vermijl will link up with former Wednesday full-back Tommy Spurr, who has joined the Lilywhites on a free transfer from Blackburn Rovers.

Another ex-Owl, Stevie May, moved to Deepdale a year ago, but suffered a season-ending injury almost immediately.
