Heung-Min Son has been one of Tottenham Hotspur’s key players in recent seasons.
Former Hamburg youth coach Markus von Ahlen has stated that he realised the flexibility in Tottenham forward Heung-Min Son’s game when he was a youngster.
The 26-year-old came through the ranks as a teenager in Germany, first playing for Hamburg and then moving to Bayer Leverkusen before eventually moving to White Hart Lane in 2015.
It took Son a while to settle down in England’s top-flight, but in recent years he has become one of the key players for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.
German coach Markus von Ahlen worked with Son during his younger days and he shared the skills he possessed back then and the ‘special’ talent he was going to become.
“We played 4-4-2 with two strikers in the centre and he played there,” Von Ahlen told BBC Sport. “But at this age, you saw it is possible for him to play on the wings. Now he is a very flexible player.
“What is special about him is the quickness and speed he has and then the character to want to make the goal, he absolutely wants to go to the goal and make the goal. You could see that at a young age.
“He talked about the Premier League and so his dream becomes truth – it is a thing of first having the talent, making the work and having the support, also a little bit of luck with injuries, but he had this vision and knew what he had to do and now he gets his dream.”
Son is regarded as one of the most underrated players in the Premier League, with his technical ability and his ability to shoot with both feet standing out.
At this moment in time, he’ll be preparing for Spurs’ Champions League tie against Ajax where his team needs a win in order to progress through to the final.
Pochettino had to do without Son in the first leg because he was suspended, but now he is set to return and he will no doubt increase Spurs’ chances of progressing through to the final where Liverpool await.
