Marko Grujic has edged Cardiff towards promotion; should he get his Liverpool chance?

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp signed the Serbian midfielder for £5.1m from Red Star Belgrade back in January 2016.

Since his loan switch from Liverpool on 17th January, Grujic has featured in nine of Cardiff’s 10 league matches, contributing to a sensational run of eight wins and two draws. Ironically, third place Aston Villa were one of the clubs also in the chase for Grujic.

With the World Cup 2018 on the horizon, the Serb believed his chances were best served in Neil Warnock’s Cardiff side – and he’s reaping the rewards right now.

With just nine games left to play, the Bluebirds are now just three points behind Wolves in top spot.

Despite his short-term success in South Wales, the ‘new Matic’ must be targeting opportunities in the Liverpool first team next season.

The 21-year-old will know all about rumours of Emre Can’s ‘summer exit’, leaving a gap in the Liverpool central midfield.

Although Jurgen Klopp has already agreed to snap up Naby Keita from RB Leipzig, Liverpool fans will be aware that, realistically, only Jordan Henderson can play a natural holding midfield role.

While Keita, Giorginio Wijnaldum, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, James Milner and Adam Lallana are all capable, forward-thinking midfield players, a wise anchor-man is needed to get the very best out of them, And Club captain Jordan Henderson has only been fit enough to feature in 19 of Liverpool’s 30 Premier League contests this term.

Klopp has given regular first team opportunities to youngsters Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez and Dominic Solanke in the last two seasons.

Taking the Champions League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup into account, Grujic has surely enhanced his chances of featuring for Liverpool.
