Celtic are currently eight points ahead of rivals Rangers in the Scottish Premiership table.
Mark Wilson has warned Celtic and their chief Peter Lawwell that if the unthinkable happens next season and Rangers stop nine-in-a-row then it could be ‘catastrophic’ for the club.
The former Parkhead defender stated that Lawwell must show some ambition when the transfer window re-opens because last summer the fans were ‘going off their nuts’ after the club didn’t invest to get into the Champions League.
The Bhoys have always dominated on the domestic scene in Scotland in recent years, but with their Old Firm rivals improving under Steven Gerrard and Brendan Rodgers departing, it has made things interesting for the next campaign.
Wilson questioned ‘can you imagine the response’ if Celtic followed the same road as last summer because he feels the reaction would be much, much worse.
“Peter [Lawwell] and the club will need to throw a good bit of money at this [nine-in-a-row] because Celtic can’t afford to fail,” said Wilson, as quoted by the Scotsman. “Rangers have put up a decent challenge this year and you’d think they will be stronger again next.
“It would be catastrophic if they didn’t do nine and the fans would never forgive the board if they didn’t splash the money.
“The fans were going off their nuts because they felt the club didn’t invest to get to the Champions League [last summer]. Can you imagine the response in the summer? It would be ten times worse if they didn’t spend money on replacements.”
Despite Rodgers leaving for Leicester City, it is highly unlikely that Rangers will be able to stop their neighbours from winning eight-in-row under the stewardship of the returning Neil Lennon.
The Bhoys hold an eight-point lead and since their Old Firm defeat before the midwinter break, they are yet to suffer a defeat.
While there is still an outside chance of Steven Gerrard’s players having a say, they can’t afford to drop more points and they will have to pick up all the points in the remaining Old Firm encounters.
Nonetheless, a big summer awaits for both clubs because Celtic have a number of loan players in their squad and Rangers will be looking to keep hold of star man Alfredo Morelos.
