Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers and enemies Celtic will do battle again next season, and Mark Wilson says it’s a good thing.
Quoted by The Glasgow Evening Times, Mark Wilson has claimed that any Celtic or Rangers fan who claims not to have missed the Old Firm rivalry is simply “talking rubbish”.
Both Glasgow giants are set to renew hostilities on a fairly regular basis next season after Rangers sealed their return to the Scottish Premiership by winning the Scottish Championship this past season.
There have been only two Old Firm outings in over four years – Celtic won a League Cup clash in 2015, before Rangers eliminated the Hoops from the Scottish Cup in April – and the most recent meeting has suggested that next season’s meetings could be crackers.
Perhaps huge pride has restricted both sets of supporters from admitting that, actually, they need one another in Scottish football, and ex Celtic defender Wilson, who spent six years at the club, says that the landscape of the national game is “boring” without such a showpiece.
“I think all these people who say ‘we don’t miss the Old Firm games’ are talking rubbish. I can’t wait for there being four important games next season,” he said via The Glasgow Evening Times.
“We’ve missed the spice and the characters. It’s been a wee bit drab Scottish football for the past few years. You remember the days when you’d Gazza and Paolo di Canio going about up here. It’s been a bit boring.”
The arrival of Joey Barton at Rangers, coupled with Brendan Rodgers’ appointment with the Bhoys has certainly helped raise the profile of Scotland’s top flight somewhat.
And, of course, the prospect of new Gers man Barton coming up against Scott Brown in an Old Firm is simply mouth watering.
