Mark Warburton’s Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers were demolished at Parkhead.
Mark Warburton has told Rangers TV that Philippe Senderos’s red card in the 5-1 demolition by Celtic last weekend was “foolish” by the experienced defender.
At 3-1 down away to their bitter rivals, Rangers were reduced to 10 men when the already-booked Senderos – on his debut for the club – cynically handled the ball.
From there, the Gers went on to ship two more goals in the final 15 minutes in what turned out to be a bitterly disappointing day for Warburton’s side.
The 31-year-old centre-back has played for nine different clubs in five different countries, and has plenty of Premier League and Champions League experience following a seven-year stint with Arsenal until 2010.
Consequently, Warburton admits that Senderos was a touch silly to be sent off in the manner that he was, but claims that the ex-Valencia man came and apologised for the gaffe directly after the game.
“The sending off….foolish,” he told Rangers TV. “But he absolutely knows it. He did the right thing and came and spoke to me immediately.
“A man of his experience and integrity knows it was the wrong thing to do, but that [sending off] definitely put us on the back foot.”
It was Rangers’ first defeat of the Scottish Premiership season, but a potentially damaging one in the psychological stakes. It will be difficult to bounce back and win the title, given they now know there is a sizeable gap in quality, but there is plenty of time in which to recover from this setback.
