Nottingham Forest manager Mark Warburton has told The Telegraph that Rangers fans are finding it tough to accept that they are not the top club in Scotland anymore.

Rangers got automatic promotion from the Scottish Championship to the Scottish Premiership at the end of last season.

Many would have expected the Gers to compete with Old Firm rivals Celtic for the title this season, but things have been very different.

The Ibrox outfit are third in the Scottish Premiership table at the moment with 50 points from 29 matches.

The Gers are 11 points behind second-placed Aberdeen, and 33 points behind leaders and Old Firm rivals Celtic.

Warburton guided Rangers from the Scottish Championship, but he and the club parted company in February.

Now in charge of Championship club Forest in England, the Englishman has claimed that it is hard for Rangers fans to accept that they are not the top club in Scotland anymore.

“Some of the Rangers fans are magnificent but the expectation is hard because it’s very difficult for them to accept their club not being at the top of Scottish football and fighting European campaigns,” Warburton told The Telegraph.

Rangers are one of the biggest clubs in the world, and their fans understandably want success.

If the Gers have a sound long-term strategy, then in the next two or three years, they should be able to give Celtic a run for their money.
