Former Rangers boss Mark Warburton has called on the Ibrox board to issue a statement outlining how they intend to catch Celtic.

Rangers have lost their last two games to Celtic by an aggregate of 9-0 and appear on the verge of another managerial change.

Warburton left Rangers at the start of 2017 in acrimonious circumstances.

Rangers manager Mark Warburton looks on during the Betfred Cup Semi Final match between Rangers and Celtic at Hampden Park on October 23, 2016 in Glasgow, Scotland.

He believes whoever is Rangers manager will struggle if there is no clear strategy to challenge Celtic’s dominance and financial power.

Warburton told BBC Sport: “I think you want the board to come out and give the fans a realistic timetable of when they are going to close the gap and go ahead of Celtic.

“Every time Celtic go in the Champions League, X amount of million pounds lands in the Celtic coffers – that is the fact of it.

“To close that gap when Celtic are doing so well makes it so difficult for any club to close that gap.”

It might be hard for Rangers to make promises like Warburton wants, as it is so open ended that they would not want to set any dates and be held to it.

After the weekend’s 5-0 defeat it is apparent something has to change, and the silence of the board is deafening.

They were vocal ahead of the cup semi-final, issuing completely ill-timed statements. Now they must step up and speak out on their plan, although they may be better off focusing on themselves instead of discussing Celtic.
