Rangers defender James Tavernier is set to extend his stay at Ibrox.
Former Rangers boss Mark Warburton has told The Scottish Sun that he loves watching Gers ace James Tavernier, almost three years since signing him.
The Gers swooped to land Tavernier from Wigan Athletic in the summer of 2015, handing the former Newcastle United youngster a move to Scotland after a dismal spell at the DW Stadium.
Tavernier has proven to be a bargain for Rangers, as he has now hit 23 goals in 126 games for Rangers, providing a major attacking outlet at right back for the Gers whilst also being dangerous from set pieces.
The 26-year-old has been regularly linked with moves back to England, but the Daily Mail claim that he is on the verge of signing a new contract to stay at Ibrox for a further two years.
Rangers fans are left waiting for that deal to go through, meaning Tavernier’s deal would expire in 2021 rather than 2019, tying him to the club after nearly three impressive years at Ibrox.
Now, with the reports over Tavernier continuing, ex-Rangers boss Mark Warburton has told The Scottish Sun that he thinks the defender is a ‘great lad’ having worked with him at Ibrox for 18 months.
Warburton noted that his consistency is admirable, as is his fitness, adding that he loves watching Tavernier play – and even credited him for improving his defensive work, something which he was heavily criticised for last season.
“Tav’s a great lad,” said Warburton. “Look at his consistency, also his availability. He’s very fit. Generally, his enthusiasm about the place is fantastic. I really like him as a lad and love watching him as a player. He’s also developing more defensive awareness,” he added.
