The Rangers goalkeeper was in fine form to limit Celtic to just one goal in the Scottish League Cup semi-final clash.

Rangers manager Mark Warburton has told the club’s official website he was delighted with Matt Gilks’ performance in the loss to Celtic.

The Gers took on their fierce rivals in the Scottish League Cup semi-final on Sunday afternoon looking to get revenge for their 5-1 defeat earlier this season.

They were unable to do that, though, as a Moussa Dembele goal in the 87th minute saw Brendan Rodgers’ side progress to the final.

In truth the Gers were fortunate to only lose 1-0 as the Hoops dominated throughout, forcing a number of top saves from Gilks.

It was an impressive performance from the Gers’ number two and Warburton says he is delighted for him, sharing what they told him before the game.

“Matt Gilks did very well and we asked him to be brave on the ball and he was being asked to be brave on the ball,” he told the club’s official website.

“He was asked to fill in for Wes Foderingham and he has been first class. He showed his qualities and I was delighted for him.”

After the disappointment of losing in the Scottish League Cup semi-final, Rangers must now turn their attention back to the league.

They are currently fifth in the Scottish Premiership, with 15 points from their first nine games of the season.

That leaves them seven points behind Celtic, who lead the table, and three behind Aberdeen in second place.

They will be keen to close that gap as quickly as possible and Warburton has urged his team not to dwell on this defeat.

“We can’t afford to keep looking back at this game now, it’s a natural reaction to sit there with your head between your knees but we have to clear our heads,” he added.

“We have two home games in a row now and if we can get the results and deliver the performances then the league table will change.”
