Glasgow Rangers manager Mark Warburton comments on Celtic’s defeat to Barcelona in the Champions League on Tuesday.
Rangers manager Mark Warburton has told The Scottish Sun that he knew that Celtic were going to struggle against Barcelona.
Celtic suffered an embarrassing 7-0 defeat to Barcelona away from home at Camp Nou in the Champions League Group C on Tuesday evening.
The Scottish Premiership giants were not expected to win or even draw against Barca, but the way they collapsed came as a surprise to many.
After all, the Bhoys had headed into the game against Luis Enrique’s side on the back of a 5-1 victory over Old Firm rivals Rangers at Celtic Park in the Scottish Premiership.
Rangers manager Warburton has revealed that he knew that Celtic were in for a long night after just two minutes.
“Celtic and Rangers had a very intense match at Parkhead, it took a lot out of both teams,” Warburton told The Scottish Sun. “They then have to travel to Spain and play one of the best teams in the world, who are smarting from a 2-1 home defeat to Alaves, a team who for the first time in 140-odd days have Neymar, Messi and Suarez back together again.
“You couldn’t get more pieces going wrong. I’m the Rangers manager but anyone in football will tell you that’s a horrible equation coming together.
“Within two minutes you saw how good they can be and thought as a neutral, that’s going to be a long night. It’s a tough place to go at the best of times without the other pieces coming together.”
Over the course of the 90 minutes at Camp Nou on Tuesday evening, hosts Barcelona had 72% of the possession, took 15 shots of which 10 were on target, and earned nine corners, according to BBC Sport.
Visitors Celtic had just 28% of the possession, took three shots of which two were on target, earned two corners, according to BBC Sport.
