Rangers boss Mark Warburton has admitted he would struggle to keep Ibrox star pair Martyn Waghorn and James Tavernier should a team from the English Championship attempt to sign them.

Whilst the Rangers boss is happy that the duo are content in Glasgow, he insists the Gers cannot contend with the wages on offer south of the border.

The Daily Mail quote him as stating:

“Tavernier and Waghorn are talking to us. Agents will talk to clubs because they are coming off the back of a good season and there will be interested parties down south.

“That’s life. If a club in the Championship offers a player of £5,000 a week £14,000 a week it’s a dilemma.

“We have to hope that they commit. We can’t match the wages down south and we don’t want to match it either.”

The same report also reiterates previous claims that the Rangers pair turned down new contract offers at Ibrox.

The duo were key to Rangers’ promotion and title winning campaign under Warburton. After arriving from Wigan Athletic they went straight into the Rangers first-team and had immediate impacts.

Waghorn scored 28 goals in 36 appearances last term, which was halted in the new year by a knee injury. Meanwhile Tavernier became a feared attacking full-back – scoring an impressive 15 goals in his 50 appearances.

Rangers will no doubt be hoping to keep both of these key men at Ibrox for next term but Warburton’s is clear that the club will not be held for ransom in any contract negotiations.

Gers fans will hope that the pair realise how big the club is and decide to stick around for the time being.
